In a few sentences, describe your connection to U2FP, why you chose to run in support of U2FP, and whether you have a personal connection to spinal cord injury and paralysis: I am an engineer working with the Assistive and Restorative Technologies Laboratory run by Kristin Zhao at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. I do research using electrical stimulation to restore movement in people living with spinal cord injury. I chose to run in support of U2FP to raise awareness and support for spinal cord injury.
Is this your first marathon/race? If not, what others have you completed? This is my first race.
What do you crave after a long race? With this being my first race, I am excited to find out for myself what I crave after the race.
Do you listen to anything when you train or race? If yes, what? I listen to podcasts while training. This morning, I listened to the Huberman Lab podcast.
What are you most excited and/or nervous about for the marathon? I have type 1 diabetes mellitus which is an autoimmune condition characterized by an inability to produce insulin and regulate blood glucose. This means I must inject insulin for everything I eat and adjust my dosing based on my real-time level of physical activity. Miscalculating my insulin during training or racing may result in serious health consequences. I am excited to run with U2FP because it is an opportunity to demonstrate that health conditions do not necessarily need to slow us down!
What do you enjoy doing in your free time? I enjoy working with my hands. Wood, metal, stone, plastic, dirt and beyond!
